GCC Calls for Free Passage in Strait of Hormuz
Speaking after a consultative meeting held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said Gulf leaders also rejected Iran’s reported closure measures related to the strait, describing them as “illegal.”
He added that the leaders had instructed officials to accelerate plans for developing a joint oil and gas pipeline project, as well as establishing an early warning system designed to counter ballistic missile threats.
The Strait of Hormuz is regarded as one of the world’s most vital energy corridors, with roughly one-fifth of global oil shipments passing through it daily before the escalation of the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
Since early March, the waterway has experienced significant disruption following the outbreak of hostilities. Although the situation is currently under a ceasefire, diplomatic efforts are continuing in search of a more durable settlement.
