The confirmation follows a declaration made days earlier by Israel's defense minister, who announced Thursday that Tangsiri had been killed in an airstrike on the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, alongside the entirety of the Iranian Navy's senior command structure, according to local media. The minister identified Tangsiri as the official responsible for orchestrating the closure of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) independently confirmed Tangsiri's death on the same day, lending further weight to what Tehran had until Monday declined to officially acknowledge.
The killing of the IRGC Navy's top commander represents one of the most consequential leadership losses Iran has suffered since the US-Israeli offensive began on Feb. 28, stripping Tehran of a senior military architect at a moment when control over the Strait of Hormuz — the chokepoint through which a significant share of global oil supply flows — has become a central flashpoint in the widening conflict.
